Pudge!! Sniff... sniff...

On hearing the news of the Tigers trading Pudge Rodriguez, I thought I'd post this photo from this past Sunday. I don't think anyone knew this would be the last "Hot Pudge Sunday" at Comerica. Sniff. We'll miss you!

Common Horse-Chestnut

Most trees on campus have identifying tags, which is often quite useful. It reminds me of the people of Macondo, who as they lost their memories put signs on things, something like 'This is a cow that gives milk" and "God exists".

If Tammy Wynette and Scarlet O'Hara watched baseball...

My fandom has crossed into new terrain this week: I have become a fan who travels. We're in Cleveland for two games. Of the first (a crushing 5-0 loss), I will say this:

If Tammy Wynette watched baseball, she might sing:
"Sometimes it's hard to be a Tigers' fan,
Givin' all your love to just one team.
You'll have bad times,
And they'll have good times
Doing things that you don't understand."

If Scarlet O'Hara were a Tigers fan, she would remind us that "After all, tomorrow is another day." I think Leyland something to this effect though without Scarlet's "fiddle-dee dee."

The crowd at the ball game

". . . all the exciting detail
of the chase

and the escape, the error
the flash of genius—

all to no end save beauty
the eternal—. . . "

Paths (for Clair)

Paths are important. Within our grid designed environment, they show the ways people actually want to move. (Good web designers know this too). Here's hoping we find our own.

Construction

The skill and organization of these workers has been pretty amazing to watch (through the not very clean library window). This was grass and trees a couple of months ago.

Happy Birthday Dale!

Things I see everyday yet don't: Part Two

I did not know, until today, that the trash bin at my bus stop had a name. Meet Ricky. Ricky the Receptacle. He says thank you. I do not know what to say.

Things I see everyday yet don't

Blurry Dandelion

So often we (I) look for the perfect image and in a way that's kind of blinding. Not the way we usually see the world and those things that strike us as beautiful or somehow arresting. Those crooked, in-between things are what catch my eye: sometimes it's nice to just take them as they come.

Sweet Heidi

Ah! When I arrived home I saw the first ever flower on the tiny Sweet Heidi plant. I find my floral namesake to be pretty cute with her six tiny leaves.

Rabbits

I don't know about you, but I can't see wild rabbits without thinking about Hazel, Fiver and Bigwig and their search for a home.

Meringue

Meringue, n.

1. a. A light mixture of stiffly beaten egg whites and sugar, baked until crisp; a shell or other item of confectionery made of this mixture, typically decorated or filled with whipped cream.

Etymology:

Perhaps related to post-classical Latin meringa (in an undated document from Artois cited in Du Cange), and classical Latin merenda (see MERENDA n.; compare MERIENDA n.), both of which mean ‘afternoon meal’ (without, however, any connotations of delicacy or luxury). For a summary of these and of other explanations which have been advanced see Trésor de la Langue Française s.v. meringue.
Compare probable loans from French in other languages: German Meringe, Meringue (18th cent.; also early 19th cent. in form Meringel: compare MARRANGLE n.), Spanish merengue (c1760), Italian meringa (1850 as marenga).

*Note: Meringue should not be confused with this

Blue and Green

The first balloon flower of the season.

And a praying mantis.

When they were an inch long, I thought they were sort of cute. Now that they're big enough to make eye contact, they're kind of creeping me out. I fear that by next week, they'll be big enough to be knocking on the door and asking to use the phone.

Batgirl Welcomes Her New Colleague

Just as I am thrilled to welcome my groovy new colleague to the hallway, Batgirl is equally thrilled welcome Wonder Woman. I think the four of us can do some pretty cool things in the months to come. As our mutual friend K pointed out, "it's good that you're both in the DC Universe."

A Rare Pear

...Rare pears and greengages,
Damsons and bilberries,
Taste them and try:
Currants and gooseberries,
Bright-fire-like barberries,
Figs to fill your mouth,
Citrons from the South,
Sweet to tongue and sound to eye...

Possibly an astrolabe.

Blue

There are about 5 minutes in the morning when the light shines through one curtain and puts this pattern on my wall. It's also this time when my living room turns a blue so warm and radiant that I have to stop and marvel at it.

Fonts and printers' ornaments

Fonts and printers' ornaments are an odd aesthetic obsession of mine though they haven't made TodayPhoto yet. In addition to its lovely fonts and decorative elements (which are featured on their stylish website), I'm pretty taken with this bottle's simple elegant shape and shiny colour. Oh,and, it's a tasty summertime drink too. That (not its fonts and printers' ornaments) is why you're supposed to buy a bottle of gin, isn't it?

Pitching

I was interested in Levi's comment from a few days ago and I was thinking about it again today. Until we got the seats we have now, we sat in the upper deck and I had a hard time seeing the differences between pitches let alone the differences between pitchers.
I know I paid a lot more attention to fielding then. It wasn't until we got the seats we have now that I really could "see" and understand pitching. I also learned a lot from moving around the park over the years; it's a slightly different game depending on where you sit. I was happy to be in our home seats again today but I know I was seeing new things from having had 11 innings in the lovely seats on Thursday. Anyway, here's Verlander, Zumaya and Jones.
